Foods for Superheroes

Sh Sh Sh Let the Baby Sleep

Welcome to the 7th day on our virtual book tour. Today we talk with young Zachary, the wonderful main character in Kathy Stemke’s new book:  “Sh Sh Sh Let the Baby Sleep,” available at Amazon.com, Barnes and Noble and Guardian Angel Publishing. Zachary goes on an odyssey performing extraordinary heroic actions in his pursuit to keep his new baby sister from awakening from her nap, while protecting her from all sorts of calamities.

Few superheroes exhibit gastronomic prowess.  I suppose they are too busy to read the New York Times on Wednesdays to see what’s up in the food world.  But I would certainly hope that Superheroes could satisfy a super hunger sometime between battling strong forces of evil and saving innocent people without devouring junk food.
Let’s ask superhero Zachary what he eats.
Hi Zach, thanks for coming by GritsandGroceries: Anthony Stemke.
Glad to be here sir. It smells great here, are you brewing green tea?

Yes, I am Zach. Do you superheroes eat super foods?
Sure, my mom believes in a nourishing diet, not too much salt and sugar, plenty of fruit and vegetables.

So, do you eat a lot of ‘hero’ sandwiches?
Yes, once in awhile I enjoy a special hero sandwich, a roast beef po boy. But I also need a lot of power so I eat a special diet.

So, what kind of special diet?
 I eat consonant blends.

Huh?
I eat BRoccoli, BLueberries, BLackberries, BLooming onions, BLack beans, BRown rice, BRownies…

Ok Zach. I got it- consonant blends.  Like what you learn about when you read “Sh Sh Sh  Let the Baby Sleep”?

Well Zach, since you’re here in my kitchen, would you care for something to eat?
Sure.
How about a roast beef, hero sandwich -New Orleans style--  aka Roast Beef Poor Boy?
Yummy!

Ingredients:

Mayonnaise
A 12-inch length of French bread
¾ cup shredded lettuce
½ lb roast beef, thinly sliced
½ cup thick- bodied beef gravy
1 tomato, sliced thinly

Method:
Split the French bread lengthwise and toast lightly under the broiler.
Spread the bottom piece of the bread with mayonnaise.
Now layer the lettuce, beef, gravy and tomato slices atop the mayonnaise.
Put the top on and slice the sandwich in half.
Makes two servings.

I’ll tell you what; people who say a hero “ain’t nothing but a sandwich” have never met Zachary. Thanks for stopping by, Zachary.

Thanks for the hero!

To my readers: What is your favorite “super” food and why?

Come to www.sprittibee.com June 21 for the answer.
SUPERHERO TRIVIA ANSWER: DAY 6

super food? I love hummus tomato sandwiches on a pita they are my faves! Blessings, Joanne

I love hummus too. We usually dip it from a bowl with melba toast of torm pieces of pita. Funny thing about pita to me, I love a "sandwich" pita with falafel, or a gyro, but hummus I always pour into a bowl and dip out.

However it is taken, your comment displays good culinary taste.

Thank You.

I'm a big fan of GORP (Good Ol' Raisins and Peanuts) on the trail: high energy from the protein, fat and natural sugar in the raisins. If we had a good way to keep hummus on the trail, I'm a sucker for that, too....

Wonderful interview. What I love about this blog tour is that everything is so unique and fun. You're setting a great example for authors who wish to go on a VBT to promote their books.

My super food is a salad filled with a variety of leafy greens--must have spinach--carrots, tomatoes, celery, beans, and topped with croutons and feta cheese.

As for Lara Croft, you'll find her in Tomb Raider. My son was playing those video games when they first came out. Tells you how long ago that was. :)

Keep up the great work.

Now THAT is an original interview for a book tour!

I think you'd find Robin's girlfriend mad, because Batman took him on some adventure and dinner is getting cold.

To all,

Gracias for making my book tour a success!

Hey Bill, I love trail mix too.

Thank you for your kind words Cheryl. I'm trying to do something different here.

Love that salad too. Thanks for answering the superhero trivia questions Cheryl. You've been right most of the time!!

Thanks for stopping by, Janet. Hope all is well with you.

Aday, you're a hoot! Great sense of humor!

Thanks, Susan, you're making me hungry!

And to all four writers at the Pen and Ink blog, I love your answer! Ch is a cool consonant blend! I'm not too keen about chicory, but I 'loves' chicken, chick peas and chorizo!!!

BILL: So that is what GORP means, thanks for visiting.

CHERYL: Try putting some sunflower seeds in that salad, I'll bet you will love it.

Janet Ann: Thanks for the compliment, my BW says it is not your mothers book tour.

J. Aday: They probably have a Bat-oven in the cave,so all should end well.

Susan: I broil chicken with cajun spice seasoning. Another way to look at it is to say that Chocolate Cake is super good (tasting) CM.

Pen&Ink: Just today made a Thai vegetable curry that included Ceci. Thanks so much for your visit

Kathy: I love you my beloved Bhuni.

Ali, that's a good one-peanutbutter and banana sandwiches, yum.

Hey Chanton,

Great interview! It was lots of fun to read. :)

My favorite super food . . . hmmm! I don't really know.

This is so cute--I love it! My "super" food is dark chocolate. Gotta have it!

I love Po' Boys. Your version sounds like the ones from Mother's on Poydras. Our favorite place is Domilise's on Annunciation where we get Hot Sausage Po' Boys and Oyster Po' Boys. Oh man my mouth is watering just thinking about them! We are lucky to be able to get local Florida mangoes all year. The hardest part is seeding and peeling them but they're soooooo good. And yes Fathers Day was truly joyous!

anthony stemke said...

ELLA: Thanks for the comment on Zach.

Manzinita: Thanks for visiting, I wish we had kids around too, but we are after all quite old.

Golden Eagle: Hi, to me a super food is one that tastes good and is good for you.

Heidiwriter: I don't care for milk chocolate, I like those dark chocolates that have the percent sign on the front of them, like 70%

Miss Sandy: Thank you for visiting. Don't get me started on those poor boy places, I dearly miss them since coming up here in '96.
And the red bean and rice lunches every monday. And the raw oysters on the half shell, etc etc.
You're lucky to have access to fresh mangos. Nice papayas would be nice too, and a hot knish once in awhile too, but thats another story.

My super food is tofu! You can bake it, fry it, blend it. It's super because it takes on the flavor of whatever foods you put it with.

I enjoyed the interview with Zachary, the superhero of Sh Sh Sh Let the Baby Sleep!

anthony stemke said...

Susanne: Glad you enjoyed the interview. You are right about tofu and its versatility. I like to make stuffed shells using tofu and they are great, plus the 20 grams of protein in it.
You can freeze tofu, crumble it and add it to ground beef recipes, but oh, you probably already know that.

Very clever and unique post, Anthony! My favorite super food is blueberries, full of antioxidants and flavor. I enjoyed doing a post for Kathy's tour earlier and hope many people are enjoying her delightful book!

Plateful said...

Love your virtual book tour and this interview idea is brilliant! I'm kinda lost when it comes to choosing my favorite food - there are plenty in the list. Well, if I had to chose just one I'd say -- biryani :))

Priya Sreeram said...

the virtual book tour looks a winner- I think i have missed out on the earlier posts but glad to catch up with Zach's eating habits & his sweet interview- his consonant blend got a smile to my face !!

CONNIE; I love blueberries too, in my oatmeal when out of blackberries. and when I make pancakes for my BW, I put some on the poured pancakes, then flip them. Amazing the nutrient factor of blueberries only just discovered 20 years ago.

PLATEFUL: I love biryani. Brought some to church fellowship after service and everyone was amazed at the flavour. One lady is from Guyana and brought a chicken curry that was fab. Only two instances of south asian food. Everyone else brings southern (U.S.) dishes or sweets. Thanks for visiting.

PRIYA: The virtual book tour was cherished by everyone, we're glad you came.
